Formative Psychology Highly significant Improvement of Skin Condition, Anxiety, Depression and Helplessness after Treatment with Formative Psychology (Keleman) Gerhard Zimmermann, MD Eczema is caused to a considerable extent by stress and a chronically aroused nervous system. Allergies can aggravate in some cases the eczema and the itching, but are an additional symptom and not the real cause of the eczema. Allergies are overreactions of the immunesystem and are promoted by an increasing amount of sensual stimulation typical for the information age. Itching is an expression of an highly aroused autonomic nervous system while scratching reduces excitement and helps the patient regulate his tension. Patients with allergies and eczema have distinct somatic and arousal patterns. These patterns go along with pressure, anger, anxiety, depressiveness, helplessness and passivity. Formative Psychology developed by Stanley Keleman (www.centerpress.com) dramatizes and disorganizes these behavioral patterns and creates a relationship between behavior and the symptoms. This somatic dialog allows the patient to recognize behavior patterns he was unaware of in connection with his symptoms. The Symptom is understood as a crises that requires a change in behavior. The therapy helps a patient to manage individual and disease related conflicts.
In a controled scientific study 41 patients with severe eczema were
treated three month with Formative Group Psychotherapy. The treatment
lead to a highly significant improvement of skin condition, anxiety,
depression and helplessness. One year after the treatment the health
state improved even further. Additionally the tendency to allergic
reactions decreased and the total blood IgE level was significantly
lowered. Total Body Severity Assessment in Atopic Dermatitis
